Michael Rice of Golden, Colorado set a new course record this morning on the standard length route of Lake Tahoe – 34.2 km (21.3 miles) between Camp Richardson, California and Incline Village, Nevada. Rice rocketed across the lake in 8 hours, 36 minutes (unofficial time pending ratification) – eclipsing Catherine Breed‘s record of 8:56 set in 2017. This represents an astounding average pace of 4 kph at 6100 ft/1860m elevation.
Rice was supported on the swim by Sarah Thomas, Ryan Willis, and James Savage; observed by Jillian Savage; and piloted by Tom “Reptile” Linthicum.
Earlier this year, Rice placed first in all four stages of SCAR, setting a course record on Apache Lake. He is the son of marathon swimmer Gail Rice and brother of Kim Sarah Rice.
